First, it depends on your definition of success!. My uncle defined success by this simple question, "What do you want to drive!?" In his mind, success was tied very closely to wealth!. At that time, I was a history major in college, and he used to say that I would end up driving a used VW Bus! He drove a BMW!. Other folks, however, determine success by happiness!. One of my best friends, and a very smart guy, has a degree and works at a golf course mowing grass!. He doesn't make a lot, but he LOVES his job, success to him is being happy!.

Assuming you're talking about money, a degree ensures that you can get a decent paying job!. I don't know any of my friends with a degree who make less than $40K a year!. On the other hand, I have friends who didn't go to school who would kill to make that much money!. Many of my degreed friends make $100K or more!. Again, I don't know any of my friends without a degree who make that much money!.

That said, there are two very notable exceptions in my life!. My wife, who doesn't have a degree, makes about $70K a year!. She earned that salary two ways:

1!. She is VERY smart!. She hates school, but she is one of the smartest people I know!.
2!. She found a job at a company that was growing rapidly, and continuously impressed her managers with attention to detail and ambition!.

The second SIGNIFICANT exception to the rule is the owner of my wife's company!. Entrepreneurs, regardless of education, can make a lot of money!. This guy barely graduated high school!. He opened up about 3 companies that failed!. Then, in his late 30's he started my wife's company!. After about 7 years, he sold the company to an investment firm!. He took home $60 million dollars out of the deal! If this guy took the SAT's, he'd be lucky to get a score that would land him in a community school!. But, he took risks, and it worked out VERY well for him!.

I highly recommend a college education!. I studied history -- supposedly not a very marketable degree unless you teach -- but I was able to apply for lots of jobs that said "college degree required!." I now make over $100K a year after about 7 years in corporate America !.!.!. much more than people tell history majors they can anticipate making!.

Still, I think about my wife and the owner of her company and I have to ask if it was worth it!. To me, it was!. But maybe it's not for everyone!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Speaking as someone who stupidly passed up the opportunity when I was younger I would say it's not essential but it will make it a lot easier!. Plus what about the whole college experience and the lifelong friends you can make!?
Not to mention the feeling of accomplishment and knowledge that you are going to have a leg up when choosing your career!. Without that education some doors will always be closed to you!. Why not give yourself the best chance at achieving success!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

as far as getting a good job you'll need a college education, but to truly be successful I personally don't think you need it!. Success is determined by what you think!. Do you think you're successful!?
I would with or without a college degree!.!.!.!.I'm happy, a good person, have a loving family and good friends!.!.!.!.to me that's a success and none of them came with a college degree!.
I have one because I wanted one to show that I completed something, to better myself!. But in no way would I be unsuccessful if I had chosen not to go to college!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think these days more and more people hear about get rich quick plans and they see athletes stacking it up, and people on tv winning lots of money so they are thinking it is not so important!.

My position on this is !.!.!.!.YOU IDIOTS!!! The odds of that happening to you are a million to one!. (or more)

On the other hand there are many people who have worked hard all of their lives without college and are successful business owners!.

To be safe, I say college is important!. BUT, the most important thing to remember when doing so is to choose the right major!. Otherwise you are wasting time and money!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I once saw a poster that summed it up well!.

On the poster was a huge house on a beach with a four car garage in the garages were four rather expensive autos!.

the words on the poster were;
REASONS TO GET A HIGHER EDUCATION

Although there are other benefits this poster sure makes it's point!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it depends on the person some of the greatest and most successful people never went to college but then for some its the greatest opportunity for them!. To learn how to live on their own and social skills!. So for some its a benefit and others it would be a waste!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on what you want to do with your life, will college assist you or is it necessary for your dream, upon asking yourself these questions, then decide!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A college education does nothing if the person doesnt use it to better themselves !. I know an esthitician ( cant spell ) that works for minimum wage at Kmart !. She also is a certified nutritionalist!.

What a waste!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
