Origin

The origin is uncertain, although it's clear that the phrase is ancient and that it predates modern English!. The earliest known record is from St!. Marher, 1225:

"And te tide and te time tat tu iboren were, schal beon iblescet!."

A version in modern English - "the tide abides for, tarrieth for no man, stays no man, tide nor time tarrieth no man" evolved into the present day version!.

"Time waits for no man" is originally a quote from a section by Death in the famous medieval play "Everyman" regarding certainty!. The original line is in middle English is "For wete you well the tyde abydeth no man" but most schlars attribute this 'tyde' as a statement of time, as in Christmastide, etc!. rather than a reference to the tides themselves!. However, misunderstanding of the older form of language have led to the the common day phrase 'time and the tides wait for no man' which can be found in several literary allusions as well as movies such as Shakespeare in Love!.

Probably Shakespeare, he said everything!. Anyway, if you like the phrase and it makes some kind of sense to you, what does it matter who said it other than being able to prefix it with, "Voltaire said", or "Confucious said" except it was in Cantonese!.!. etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
