Universals are "genus," and particulars are "differentia!."
Differentia: ": an element, feature, or factor that distinguishes one entity, state, or class from another; especially : a characteristic trait distinguishing a species from other species of the same genus"
Genus: "1: a class, kind, or group marked by common characteristics or by one common characteristic; specifically : a category of biological classification ranking between the family and the species, comprising structurally or phylogenetically related species or an isolated species exhibiting unusual differentiation, and being designated by a Latin or latinized capitalized singular noun
2: a class of objects divided into several subordinate species"

So when you begin to learn what a table is, you notice things that are similar (genera) and things are different (differentia) such as 3 legged tables; tables that fold; etc!.

The universal, the genera in "table" is that it has legs and a flat surface to put things on!. Even a water table is presumed to have a flat surface though it may slope uphill!. A table of contents hold the things that put "on" it to hold, such as the Chapter names and page numbers!.

You can continue drawing universal from particulars all you want!. See the story in my other answer about tubes, transistors, and chips, all which come from the "particular" called a "switch!."

BY THE WAY: Universals are not like Plato's Forms and Ideas, although he meant it to be!. It's just that his forms and ideas are cognitively invalid and very unsound in reason!.

Aristotle said they were "in the things themselves," as if we could someday use science to extract them!.

The Stoics, Occam (Occam's Razor,) Ayn Rand and others agree universals, like all metaphysical existents, are conceptual, i!.e!., of consciousness, thus of language!. That is how my explanation above works!. Universals cannot be "tapped" into!.
