Focusing on the problem allows us to fully understand it and analyze its causes, however it may lead to inaction!. Focusing on the solution will lead us to try to find our way out of a problem, but alone does not guarantee our solution is accurate or that it won't lead to other problems!. I hate to say that when I am asked a specific question but a good problem solving process requires both, not at the same time!. We need to focus on the problem first in order to understand its causes and symptomes!. Then we should think of solutions once the problem is identified based on analyzed causes!. You can do so, and publish final-drafts about color till your blue in the face without making any headway towards a suitable ends!. A well-defined-problem without a plausible-soluiton is like an object-in-reality without any noticeable features!. Surely someone could notice some features of the object in question, but the person who can notice the unique and more importantly relevant features to the well-defined-problem; are legions ahead of those who say the problem is unanswerable!. 1) Define the problem, and the exact impact of harm it is causing in present-physical reality!. 2) What are the factors, modalities, physical-concrete aspects involved that are present!. 3) Which of these factors are being misused against itself and mulitplying it's wrath with lapsing-time!? 4) What is the source of the problem!? 5) Will allowing factors to happen that are counter to the source of the problem help, hinder, or solve the problem!. 6) Start with the Solution you have in mind, and work backwards towards your problem, run the solution forwards in reality!. Assess benefits, problems and adjust appropriately!. Try from a different angle!. I think both are critical at different times, with obviously the assessment of the problem being foremost!. If we don't understand the problem first and fully, there is a chance our solution won't be as successful as if we understood each aspect of what exactly we are trying to fix!. We could ultimately create bigger problems if the wrong solution is applied, but no solution at all means problems forever!
