Question: If a tree falls down in a forest and no one is there to see it, does it make a sound!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
yes, because even if there's no one to witness it's fall, it doesnt mean that its not existent!. same with the death of a random person!. just cuz no one knew the person and no one claimed it, it affected the morgue person!. same with the tree, all the animals and plant life that it affected, it changed someone or somethings path(metaphorically and realistically)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The term 'sound' has two senses:
_________

The first sense of the term 'sound' is defined as:

Type (1): The mental, first-person experience of hearing!.

The second sense of the term 'sound' is defined as:

Type (2): The wave-vibration of rapidly moving particles through a solid, liquid, or gas, capable of being experienced!.

______

Under the Type (1) analysis, the answer to your question is "no"!.

Under the Type (2) analysis, the answer to your question is "yes"!.

_______

John Locke solved this alleged paradox a few hundred years ago!. He worked on perception and such quite a bit, and concluded that by 'sound' we generally mean that first-person experential quality or "hearing" something - therefore, "sound" is not really in objects, but in our minds, that is mind-dependent!. This is Type (1), of course!.

However, he also noted that sound can be studied using physics, and hence, does not need to be heard!. So, in this sense of the term 'sound' it clearly is a part of objects, and hence mind-independent!. This is Type (2)!.

This answer - the one I just gave - is standard in psychology, cognitive science, analytic philosophy, and such!. It has be known for quite a while:

It's called the Primary and Secondary Qualities, which Locke first coined'!.

'Primary Qualities' are mind-independent!. So, 'mass' or 'electric charge' is a primary quality of an object!.

'Secondary Qualities' are mind-dependent!. So, 'sound' or 'color' or 'hot' and 'cold', are all relational on an experiencing being having thos event's like 'sound-sensation' in their minds, and the dispotion of object producing the sensation in the person!.

Old news!. But, it's okay!. I was astounded when I learned this!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. People are not the only things affected by sight and sound!. Think about all the living things in nature!. Even if you forget about animals, what about the other trees!? plants!? insects!? and all the other breathing living organisms!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no , you need a transmitter ( ears ) to recieve the vibration from the air so as to convert it to 'sound' !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes just because it does not create a vibration in someones ear it makes a vibration in the air!. That vibration will travel somewhere whether it moves the smallest leaf or ripples on the water it happened!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
