i played both actually!
i played violin for 8 years
and oboe for 3
i dont' think they can be compared
they just have different tones and timbres
its like comparing an orange to a chair
hah
that made no sense at all
but you get what i mean!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I take it that this is a strictly opinion-type question!.!.!. therefore all that follows is strictly my opinion only!.

Given the two choices, I prefer the oboe!. It seems to me to have a little more mysterious, smoky, sultry sound, although it seems the more directly that which creates the sound is being manipulated (via air & the sound of the vibrating reed resonating down thru the instrument & altered by the opening/covering of holes, in the case of the oboe; or the horsehair-strung bow being drawn across the strings [or plucking them] & resonating in the body of the violin) the more easily expressive the instrument!.

By direct manipulation I mean being touched by fingers!.!.!. so I guess I'd have to say that since the oboe's sound is altered by opening & closing holes while the violin's sound is altered by actually touching the strings with a bow & fingers, the violin would seem to be more expressive to me!. Although, it seems to have a potential to be screechy & annoying, but that's just me!.

Ease of expression aside, that does in no way detract from the music of the oboe!. It has a unique character all its own & its expression comes more in the character of its music, the way it's played, somewhat more limited in the way it's designed, & requires more subtlety & expressive effort to be made understood!. Rather like the difference between black & white photography & color; students of photography are first taught to shoot in B&W, which stresses the composition & more basic elements first!.

My experience!? I first sang in a choir, then played clarinet (very similar to the oboe; mine was a very beautiful instrument, ebony & silver) through elementary & into junior high, then acoustic guitar, then keyboard through high school (including piano, harpsichord, clavinet, organ & synthesizer of several different types)!. I even played a little hammered dulcimer!. I took music throughout my 12 years of grade school including composition & analysis!.

The Sciences were stressed in my childhood rather than the Arts; music composition & analysis were easy & I breezed thru my classes where I was given independent study of the science of sound, and I fell in love with synthesizers & sound theory!. I was allowed to take one, sometimes both synthesizers home for the weekend!. Mind you, all this was in the 60s & 70s when much of synthesized sound was limited by having to be pre-programmed or basic elements manipulated on the fly!. The early electronic instruments I played were more suited to studying sound than being played in what most would consider an artistic fashion!. I used a Moog in recording the sound for a school musical dance performance, "Dante's Inferno"!.

Later, I did equipment setup, sound, special effects & recording for a few classic rock, new-age & alternative bands (including photography, still & video)!.

No, I presently do not play a musical instrument so much as I work with sound & photography; I very much would like to return to my roots & add a saxophone, bagpipes & zitar, for instance!.

I cannot sing anymore due to surgery on my larynx & tardive dyskinesia!.

Some of my favorite music includes the Switched-On Bach series (first records I ever purchased), just about any Pink Floyd (the second), King Crimson, Traffic & Enya!.

I hope that this adds some depth to your answers! ;DWww@QuestionHome@Com

As a violinist, I am biased when I answer violin!. I find it's tone is much easier to listen to, and not so much like a duck(no offense to oboists)!.

Each has their own challenges and their own place in music!. You can't really place one above the other in importance!.

But, like I said, I'm a professional violinist, so my answer is fully and completely biased!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm an oboe major in college so obviously that's my preference!.!.!.!.Since I am in music school, I can actually make it sound s it's supposed to!. Working with children learning oboe or violin!.!.!.!.NASTY sound that could make you vomit and your head explode!.!.!.

The oboe and violin reflect the hours you put into it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
