I get a reputation for bluntness because I try to tell the truth, and cram a lot of info into my responses!. So, I am not being cranky - I am giving you *tough love truth* - and with a smile and a handshake, OK!?

Within 100 miles of NYC, there are MANY fine colleges - you need to do some research!. Listening to people HERE will give you qualified answers, and also those from people who cannot even spell "Juilliard" (hmmmm !. !. !.)!.

First of all - I am a NYSSMA judge and teacher since 1971!. Did you make AS both in 11 and 12 grade!? AAS!? All-County!? Do you take vocal lesson from the BEST certified, degreed teacher you can find!? Do you *sightread* really well!? Do you have an academic average at least in the middle nineties!? Did you complete a 5 or 7-course sequence in music in HS!? AP Music Theory!? Because if you did not do these things, YOUR COMPETITION DID!

Look in NY, CT, PA, NJ!. You know the SUNY schools that have good SCHOOLS of music ( not just a department - geez, why would you go to Oneonta when you could go to Purchase!?) Then explore all the private schools!. Ditto for the other states!. WARNING - stay away from that place in Albany that is named after a SAINT and a flower - their music school is SO bad that most of us in administration in school districts just drop the applications in the trash!. Their OTHER schools are good - but not music!. People go there to finish up credits for a pay increase - and shudder about it!.

I always tell students in the arts to attend a college in a big city - the arts possibilities there are INFINITELY better!. Attending a place in the middle of Cow Country is great only if you want to someday work with cows!. Our son (pianist) decided on Temple U in PA - loved it - did fabulous!. Me!? Boston and Hartford!. Husband!? Hartford and NYC!. People who say "I go to a little college where they pay extra attention to their students!" have no basis for comparison!. The place is so tiny, of course they get attention - but there is not much going on!. My son was taught by a top, famous pianist who gave him TONS of attention - trust me, we were on top of it!

I wish you luck - if you are in 9th or 10th grade, you better get MOVING!! If you are a junior or senior - I hope you have done some of the above things, and then devote yourself to doing the rest!. Music school is tougher than medical school - and YES, the hours spent learning are longer!. You better really want this, because you are signing up for one bit thrill ride!. GOOD LUCK!! Hey - if you do NYSSMA, I could be your judge this year!. BTW - LEARN PIANO - lots and lots - start NOW!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, if you can get in and you don't want to travel far, then, yes, Julliard!. If you're willing to venture farther away, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music is one of the most respected programs in the country!.
