Don't buy a classical guitar unless you're interested in classical music!. Every new player feels that their fingers are too fat but with practice like everyone else you will get the hang of playing a regular steel string guitar!. You can look for one that has a wider neck (1 3/4" at the nut) if that makes you more comfortable!. I happen to actually have fat fingers and I can play any guitar including those with really narrow necks!. It's just a matter of practice and perseverance!.

In answer to your question, you cannot put steel strings on a classical guitar!. The additional tension of the steel strings will ruin the guitar, either by pulling up/off the bridge or by warping the top (or both!)!.

You can indeed strum a classical guitar although the lower tension of the strings makes it a little more difficult to do well!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi Eric

You cannot put steel string on a classical guitar!. The bridge will eventually pop off and rip the harmony table!. Their is about 150 to 200 pounds of tension when you add steel string as compared to 90 pounds with nylon!.

As for strumming, you eat your cake the way you want!. YOu can strum, slap, finger-pick etc!.!.!.!. whatever you feel like doing as long as it sounds good!.

Look at Flamenco guitar players!? They beat the sheeeet out of the guitar!.

Basically, rather than changing strings, get a low-priced steel string acoustic!. The high sound more crispy as compared to classic nylon string whcih sound more mellow, softer!.
Depends on your style of music!. If you like country, rock, blues etc!.!.!.go for steel!. If you love smooth romantic, gypsy, spanish type of music, get a nylon string!. Just because it is called a classical guitar doesn't mean you have to play classic music!.

Look at the Gypsy king!. They play modern music with a spanish flavor on nylon-string classical guitar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is one thing to consider!. If you use steel strings the increased stress could damage the seating of the bridge which is usually fixed to the body by glue!.

Why can't you 'strum' a classic guitar!? What about flamenco players!?

It reminds me of a person who claimed that you shouldn't play boogie or 'pop' music on a piano as it would damage it!. The Pianist who was playing replied that the piano doesn't know what your playing!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

why don't u get a wider neck acoustic!?!?!?my friend has said that those kind of guitars are available!.!.!.

anyway i think u can put acoustic strings on classical guitar!.!.!.but u'll have to change a few more parts of the guitar as well!.!.!.u should ask the people at the guitar shop!.!.!.they'll be able to fix it for u i hope!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you put steel strings on a classical guitar YOU WILL DESTROY IT!. because they are NOT BRACED for steel strings!.

AND!.!. you most certainly CAN strum a classical guitar so I don't know why 'everyone' says it can't be done!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you can alter them, but it is better you go to the musical store nearby and make it done with some experienced luthier!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
