Question: Is it possible to make my saxophone sound more jazzy!?
Hey, I'm a B flat Tenor Saxophone player and I happen to be in jazz!. My saxophone came with a mouth piece and everything, and what I've noticed, it doesn't seem like it sounds like the way it should be!. When I tune up in jazz, I have a mark to how far my mouth piece should go in so I'm in tune!. But it doesn't seem like it sounds jazzy!. Is it the brand/quality!? Mouth piece!? Reed!? By the way, if it is the mouth piece what brand should I get!? I was thinking about getting a new one sometime soon too!. Right now mines a Premiere brand!. Is this a good one or not!?

Thanks for your answers!. Cheers! x]Www@QuestionHome@Com

Much of it has to do with the player, of course, but I (and about all the other saxophonists I've known) use a different mouthpiece for jazz and classical playing!. The jazz mouthpiece tend to be a little wider!. If you can, try to find a store that lets you try them out and has a good selection!. Stores like that are hard to find, however, and usually are only near a university with a very large music program!.

Anyway, I used an Otto Link mouthpiece (I used a metal 5-star; they make rubber ones, too)!. I also had a Berg Larsen, which was more wicked sounding!. Meyers are popular in jazz, too, and there are several others!.

To give you an idea of what's out there, here's a link to tenor sax mouthpieces at Musician's Friend:

There's nothing better than a tenor sax in jazz! Just get some jazz music and work it! I don't believe it has to do with what you're playing on!. I know that they have jazz reeds available and metal mouthpieces and certain saxophones that work better with the genre, but they are expensive and professional!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

to make a song sound jazzy, you have to swing the notes!. When I mean that play to eigthth notes like long short long short long short!. It shouldn't be your instarmunt that sounds jazzy, it should should be your rythym that sounds jazzy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
