For the vast majority of universities and colleges, to qualify to major in music you have to be able to get into that college's music school!. That almost always requires an audition on the instrument you're getting in on!.

So basically to get into the music major, you're going to have to learn how to play SOMETHING well enough to be able to get into the music school!. You can't be a music major who doesn't know how to play an instrument (or sing)!.

If you can't play anything well enough to get into the music school, you can't be a music major at least at that school, and if you're really set on being a music major you could either take private percussion lessons from someone until you're good enough to get in, or go to a college who doesn't require an audition (you may have to look really really hard, I don't even know if there are any) to be a music major!.

Sorry!. Good luck!

EDIT: Ahhhh!.!.!. you play the guitar!. If you can play guitar well enough to get into the music school, you can do that to get in!. Once you're in, you could probably take a beginning drum class while you're majoring on guitar, and if you get good enough fast enough, you may even be able to switch majors and be a percussion major!. I warn you though, most colleges require you to be REALLY good on percussion before you get into their music school on it!. Same with piano and violin and voice!. Maybe guitar too, but you've been playing your whole life!. Kudos to you if you can get in! :DWww@QuestionHome@Com

mmmm i'm not really sure if you could major in music while not knowing how to play the instrument!.

my question is, why would you want to major in music when you really know nothing of it O__o!?

music majors have a LOT of different classes!.
music theory - one of the big ones - does require knowledge of how to read music!.

no!. they don't teach how to play!.
it's college, they kind of expect it!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. You will never pass the audition!. There is an audition process for your proficiency on your major instrument as well as basic musicianship!. Some community colleges may let people slide but I went to good schools and they were not easy to get into even for people who were pretty good on their instruments!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

haha ya but good luck going somewhere in life with that major!. Because frankly, if you are just starting, u wont major and be better than other people and take their spot playing in symphonies!. don't major in something you've never even done beforeWww@QuestionHome@Com

Music majors don't focus instruments as much as musical theory, composition, and understanding!. You must learn piano!. Guitar is a good foundation!. You can learn drums regardless of your music major!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Why not ask this question to the school you plan to go to!? Wouldn't they be the logical source for an accurate answer!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

yes they doWww@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, the point of college classes is to learn!. They probably won't even ask if you have experience- they will likely just assume you dont!.

Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com
