The fingerings are the same, so you won't have any trouble with that!. What you may find difficult is the embouchure - soprano is a tricky beast and will take some getting used to!. The real trick is not to bite down, as if you do that on soprano it'll turn ugly very quickly! Practice should sort that out for you though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Switching from any instrument into another intstrument in the same kind, like alto sax to soprano is usually fairly simple!.

You'll have to adjust to the air etc like the below said!. The other thing you have to work with is the fingerings, but it shouldn't be too hard since its the same instrument group!. If you don't know about the relations between alto instruments, bass etc!.!.!. from alto to soprano, the fingerings are all the same, except for may be 1 or 2 moved keys!. BUT, although the fingerings are the same, all the notes are 'slid'!. For example, your A on alto may come out as a C, which is 3 halfs up, and your D would be a F!. Just as an example!.

I think you should go for it, try as many instrument groups/sub groups as possible :) Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am a music performance major at Grand Valley State University (trombone)!. Obviously I do not play sax, but I remember one of the jazz sax players mentioned that it wasn't easy; although not hard!. The biggest issue that you will have when switching is learning how to control your air!. That was my biggest issue when I started to learn how to play bass trombone; and again when I switched to a bigger mouthpiece!.

If it is anything like trombone as far as air goes it will probably take you about 2 weeks to get used to the difference in air needed!. I would recommend looking up breathing exercises up on youtube!. Breathing exercises will help speed this process up as well as improve your tone for both instruments!.

Hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
