Question: Four Part Harmony music theory help!?
Okay!.!. so I have a take home test and I really need help! I'm confused
The test is onh four part harmony, and it's in the key of e minor!. The first chord is a i chord, then it goes to a iv chord!.!. then a V chord!. In the V chord, it's a 6/5 inversion and therers a # sign under it!.!. meaning I should sharp the third!. My question is, if the D is in the bass!.!. what the hell do I sharp!? I can't sharp a B because that wouldn't make sense! It's a B chord!.!. so my question is - if I have the notes like this:
D in bass, B in tenor, G in alto and E in soprano - which note do I sharp!? I'm supposed to sharp the third!.!. but im still very confused!. Anyone know what I should do!? Thanks!. also, at the end of the paper I'm supposed to build a suspension!.!. the note is an E, on the staff in the bass clef, and under it, it says 4-#3 what should I suspend it to!? I don't know what any of this means! Any help would be greatly appreciated and points rewarded, thanks!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well like the person above me said, V chords in minor are almost always major!. And if there's a V chord in e minor and the third is sharped, you'd sharp the D because that'd be the 3rd of the V chord(B, D#, F#)!.

And the 4-#3 suspension with the E!. To build a 4-#3 suspension, on top of the E you'd write an A that resolves down to a G#(#3 because in e minor G is natural!.) I'm pretty sure that's what you mean by that!.

Hope it helped a little!.

Hey!.!.!.here are some tips!.!. When you are working in minor, you always have to make sure that you keep the V chord major!. Which means you will have to sharp the D in the chord because that will keep the chord major( since B D(#!) F# i s a major chord) and the em key signature only provides for the F#!. As far as the notes you have provided, I don't think you have them right!. A major V is in em is B D# F# A( which is a Mm7 which is very common in tonal music!.) As for the suspension, you should try to end the excerpt with Do Ti Do, meaning you should try to suspend E some how, go down to D and then Resolve to the tonic!. I hope this is of help to you!!
