The best finger exercise is called 'Isometric fingering'!. Their are 24 of them and it covers the entire finger combinations of the left hand and is the best exercise to do for flexbility!.

You pratice them with this in mind 1 fret = 1 finger!. Each finger controls a position on the fretboard!.
Whether you are playing at the 5-6-7-8 fret or elsewhere!.

Ex!. 1-2-3-4 fret (first 4 frets) are played with 1 finger per fret technique!.

Now here are exercises and also, use alternate-picking!.!.!.!.!.no exception and hold your finger on the fret before playing the next and so on!.

Do each exercise on all the strings, going up and going down on each string!.
Do 1 exercise per week and YES, you can even incorporate guitar riffs with most of these fingerings!.

Once you mastered this, then you can play each exercise using 2 strings
Ex!.!.!. 1-2 on one string and 3-4 on another string etc!.!.!. You will start to recognize certain patters and riff that you have heard but, was wandering how they did this!.

You will have difficulties with some of these exercise, but once you know them, your fingering flexiblity and playing will improve drastically!.

I play classical guitar so some of this might not apply to you!.

Exercise for right hand (if you finger pick): Extend fingers!. Bend them only at the joint between fingers and hand (sort of like making a fist, but your finger tips will be by your wrist instead of curled up)!. Do it slowly and feel the different muscles that are used for this movement

Exercise for left hand: Finger independence!. With your finger tips on a table (or anything really) practice lifting each finger individually!. This is especially helpful with exercising the pinky finger!. also practice lifting different combinations of finger (ex!. middle and pinky)!.

Exercise for the brain: Visualize!. This depends on what you're learning at the moment!. It might be chords for a specific song, or scales, etc!. The key is to really visualize what you would play!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

look up joe satriani on youtube hes got some good ones!. also just learn scales and modes and try to make your own from them!. it really makes you think about how and why notes sound good together and you might even form a song from one!. For a simple one for example is the spider!. You line your fingers up on the low E string like so: first fret index, second middle finger, third fret ring finger and fourth fret pinky!. then simultaniously move your first and third finger up to the A string on the same frets!. Then, keeping your first and third fingers in place, move your second and fourth fingers to the D string also on the same fret!. Do this across and back over the strings!. This one really builds muscle strength and makes your fingers respond better!.
