Question: Why does playing a C# scale over an E major chord sound so much like the style of the Allman Brothers Band!?
And why does C# even work when played over an Emaj!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am sure you mean C# minor over E major!. It is the relative minor (or aolian mode)!. It is all the same notes just rearranged C# to C#!.


E Major is E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D# !.
C# Minor is C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A, B!.
All the same notes!.

So essentially if you are playing C# minor pentatonic (8th Position) or C# blues you are actually playing E Major Pentatonic!.

That is the formula Allman Brothers (and many country and southern rock guys) use!.

Lynyrd Skynyrd did the same though often it was E Minor over G major!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
