thelion makes a very good point!. And even if you're just playing in standard tuning, the range of string gauges he listed are the min and max you want to go (9-12 on high E, 42-52 on low E)!.

But the general answer is this: string gauge is entirely a matter of personal preference!. In general, the lighter the string, the thinner and "weaker" it will sound - but easier it is to play!. The heavier the string, the fuller and richer it'll sound - but the rougher it'll be on your fingers (especially if you're trying to do a lot of bending)!.

If you're playing lots of rhythm, chances are you'll feel better with heavier strings (10-12)!. If you're playing lots of lead, you'll probably like lighter strings (9-10)!.

How they feel and sound also depends on the type of guitar they're on!. For example, I put 9s on my strat, 10s on LPs and my semi-hollow, and 11s on my hollow!.

If you're just not sure, try a pack of 10's!. They're a good middle-ground!. See how you like the feel and the sound of them!. Then try either lighter or heavier depending on your experience!.

It's just a matter of what's best for you!. So experiment!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

alot depends on what tuning your using standard E try 9-42 if you want a heavier feel and are dropping the 6th string to D try 10-46!. for D standard try 11-46!. if you are going to C standard try 12-52!. the lower the tuning the heavier string you need!. however you will see that you need light enough strings to bend the notes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you bend notes a lot then the extra light strings would be better and easier to play!. Lighter strings also sound just a bit brighter!. However, if you play in a dropped tuning, lighter strings will feel floppier which isn't good!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You need the thicker strings my friend, trust meWww@QuestionHome@Com
