Question: When you rosin a bow, do you have to crack the rosin!?
I was initially told by a friend of mine that you have to make the rosin powdery by cracking it on the end of the bow!.

That gets annoying and makes a mess!. But I've looked some stuff up on line and no one says anything about doing that!.

Would the rosin still work on the bow if I dont crack it!?

BTW - I dont really play the violin, but I have one and do it for back up on some tracks!. Just for the fun of it you know!.

Thanks!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, it is advised that you should scratch the top layer of the rosin with scissors, sandpaper, or penny!.!.!. BUT only if if you have a new cake of rosin, for the first time only!. You should do this because very little rosin powder will go into the bow hair until the top layer is worn out!. Yes, it's messy, but it's only a one-time thing!. Do it over a trash can!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no you dont crack the rosin, it dosent ruin the rosin, ut it makes it harder to use!. you want to run the bow along the long side of the rosin and the powder will come off just fine with enough pressure!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i went to a specialist and he said you just have to scratch the top layer off with a penny!.!. that is the point of cracking it so that you can get to the middle but you are right that does make a mess!Www@QuestionHome@Com
