Question:

How good could I get!? Would I be excellent like kids who did an instrument through middle school!? I play double bass but I don't want to play double bass anymore!. I don't own my own so I have to use the school's and it's too big to lug from school to home and back everyday!. Plus I can't bring one home to stay because we don't have enough if I did!. I want to switch to trumpet!. I self taught myself piano but I still can't sightread music from piano!. I started double bass when I was 10 in elementary school!. Could I compete with kids in my school who've been playing since 4th grade in my school if I had private lessons for 1 year!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

When you decide, get some instruction from a live person paid or free, but where they can see and hear your progress!. That is the only way that mistakes are going to be caught early before they become serious or discouraging problems!. The use of web sites is a bonus, but not the way improve your skills and definitely not the way to begin!.!.
How long is impossible to answer!. Even if I knew you personally, it would only be a wild guess!.

It depends on your dedication to the effort it will take to learn the new instrument, and your grasp of music theory from your old instrument!.
Be patient with yourself, and don't expect miracles in the first week!. Give yourself the chance; you will probably do better on an instrument you like than on one you ar tired of!. also, having it at home will give you the opportunity to pick it up an play it when the notion takes you; this will give you more practice time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
