Question: FIRST ARABESQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!?
i am auditioning for the AMerican Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive Program and they require a photo of you in first arabesque!. Ive been dancing since i was 2 and ive been on pointe since i was nine but my first arabesque has always been a weakness!. what are some tips on having a perfect arabesque!? here are some more specific questions
1) how do i keep my back straight
2) how do i get my leg to be higher off the ground
etc etc etc

working on your splits will help the height of your leg!. also, developing (sp!? lol) to the back and holding as long as you can will help the strength!.

as for helping your back, a good excersize is to lay on the ground on your stomach!. then lift yourself up (your shoulders and ribs and everything) using your back muscles to hold you (not your hands)!. hold this for as long as you can, and repeat!.

another good excersize is to square your hips, and hold onto a barre or chair or counter (whatever you have at home to hold onto)!. slowly lift your back leg into an arabesque, keeping your back and shoulders very lifted, and making sure you're very square!. lift the leg as high as it will go, and hold it there for as long as possible!. then relax, then repeat!. it sometimes helps to have someone lift your leg higher for you and hold your shoulders up, then they let go and u use youre strength to hold it!.
