Question: I'm looking to upgrade my Alto Sax!?
and I need some suggestions as the only Sax I've bought was a beginner one in Middle School and now that I'm a Sophomore, it's starting to show its age!. Not to mention the fact that I'm at an Arts school and most people have a Professional model already!.!.!.

Anyway, I need suggestions on what brand/models are the best to upgrade to; and if there are any trusted online retailers that have a good payment plan!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The best pro brands are Selmer, Yamaha, Yanagisawa, Keilwerth, and Cannonball!.

They all have a bit of a different feel to them, but they are all great brands!. It's really more of a personal choice as to what feels good to you and gives you the sound you're looking for!.

Here's a few newer models that get great reviews:
Selmer Paris Model 62 / Series III
Yamaha YAS-82 Z Series
Keilwerth SX90R or the Shadow
Cannonball Big Bell Series

also, don't forget that vintage models, even though old and worn, can be AMAZING horns!. Martin, Selmer Mark VI, Selmer Super Action 80 (series I), King, Selmer Paris Cigar Cutter, and many old Conn's can be better than anything new you'll try!. And often times, people don't know what they have- you can find these guys for fairly cheap, just because they've been used!. You can check eBay or Craigslist for these, but do plan on spending another $300 or so AFTER you buy it to have it put in proper working order (you never really know what you're going to get from these sites)!. also, check your local newspaper and pawn shops!.

If you're dead set on having a brand new horn, check these sites:
http://www!.wwbw!.com
http://www!.musiciansfriend!.com
Both of these websites have great financing options, competitive prices, REAL customer service numbers, and decent warranties and return policies!.

HOWEVER, when upgrading to a pro horn, it means spending a lot more cash for a great quality horn- so I recommend taking your mouthpiece in to your local music store and spending a day trying out all they have to offer!. Whenever possible, try before you buy! Just because a sax is popular and "the best ever made" does not mean that it will be right for you or that you'll even like it!

I should note though, that if you are interested in Cannonball (which ARE worth a look!), not all music stores carry them!.!.!. you have to email them for a list of dealers in your area: http://www!.cannonballmusic!.com

Hope this helped a little, and good luck finding a new horn! :)

Hello Linux,

You mention that you are at an Arts School!. My advice to you is to have the discussion with your saxophone professor!. Not only will the professor give you the best advice, he may even be a contributing factor as to going with you and helping decide which instrument you sound best on!. People here can give you their opinions but since you are paying big buck tuition for education at an arts school!.!.!.!. I think I would be using the professional advice they are qualified to provide you with!. And there is another reason to ask for the professor's advice!.!.!.!. From there, you are going to be enrolling in a college music program that I am sure the professor is familiar with in terms of the saxophone teaching staff as well as what the specific professors recommend their students to play on!. I do think you should plan to ask the saxophone professor to help you will getting your next saxophone and it may just be, he will also know of people interested in selling!.!.!. you could luck out and also save some money!.

I know I did not give you any name brands!.!.!. and I could have!.!.!. as my daughter has professional model alto / tenor / and soprano saxophones, but what is best for her might not be what your professor would recommend!.

Hope that helped a bit!.
Thanks for reading!.
