Question: How Do I Give Them a Winning Attitude!?
Okay every year at band competitions we go and do decent; we are an A class but we never make the top three!. This one band always gets all the awards and it gets quiet annoying to us and they all say we need to practice harder and they get this winning attitude for that week and that is it!. I am a hardcore band geek and I know I want to blow the crowd away next competition!. I want tot know how do I keep this want to win feeling going!? I know we shouldn't hate that band but they are stuck up and I want to show them all that we can put on a good performance too!. We also have this cocky girl who won't listen to us when we tell her she is in the wrong place and she still thought she was right when we watched the video!. Should I tell the teacher; the girl is our section leader but I don't like the way she teaches us!. She never goes over the stuff we play bad just the good stuff and that is not what a sectional is for!. Idk I am tired of my friends going oh they are so much better than us and one of my flute friends was amazed by bands that have eight flutes when we only have four!. I kept telling her if we play hard we can sound like eight flutes!. I don't want to make us all cocky about winning but I want them to have the umph that the few of us do in there!. I don't think they understand that it take passion to do this and I don't see any passion when they say we are going to lose before we even go on the field!. I would love to have your help because this is my passion!.

You can't make people passionate about anything!. They will feel as they feel!. I know how you feel, though, because I am also passionate about the flute!. Do tell the teacher about this section head, he/she doesn't sound like a good leader and you won't get anywhere with her!. From my experience of orchestras and bands I find that if no-one knows what they are playing (i have a lot of experience with this) then they will start to follow the person who does know what they are doing!. You can help your section out enormously by getting your own copy of the music and using a metronome, practise it!. If you know what you are doing and getting it right then they will copy you!. Remember to play with power so that you can be heard!. Push from your stomach and also try some exercises!. The one I use is try to play a piece without tongueing!. The notes must be separated, and with a good sound, but you are not allowed to tongue them!. It can get quite tiring so don't make yourself dizzy - stop if you are feeling tired!. You can try to spark confidence in the group by complimenting people individually!. Do try to get rid of, or depose your section leader because you won't get anywhere with someone like that!. also, don't be downhearted if you don't win because the world is full of rejection and you can't let it get to you if this is your passion!. Hope this helped, good luck! :) xWww@QuestionHome@Com
