Hi jro:

Sounds to me like the bass needs adjusting!. If you have never done this before!.!.!.!.please, take it in to your local guitar shop and have a tech do it!. Adjusting the bridge and saddles on your own can make the guitar even worse if you have no previous experience doing this!. You may get lucky and get the tension you want, but would throw the calibration out and therefore the tuning!. Might go to play some octaves and find out your either sharp or flat!

A tech would look at the bass, select the right strings for it, then install them and work on adjusting and setting the bass up properly!.

Hope this has helped!.!. and good luck!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

If it really is tuned correctly then the tension should be correct with it as well!. However their is the off-chance that you may have actually tuned it to a whole other octave lower but the same note!. In which case you will just have to tighten the string with the tuning machine, however don't do it too much because obviously it will snap with too much tension!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it sounds as if the action/neck may need adjusting!.
if the bass sounded ok with other strings, that it's either the new strings themselves!. or you need an adjustment!.

it happens with guitars too!. I have had to find JUST the right gauge strings for each of my guitars and basses!. using too light or too heavy strings can make the instruments sound bad!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If your bridge and neck are set-up correctly, and it is tuned correctly, then try heavier gauge strings!. Physics dictates that heavy strings need more tension to produce the same pitch as light strings!. That should get rid of the floppy feel!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Try raising the bridge or adjusting the saddles until it
can be in tune and not all loosey goosey!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
