I think this is one of the great characters of modern theatre!.

Here is a man who wallows in self pity and cannot rise above his disfigurement!. He is desperately in love with Christine, a love tainted by his need to wear his mask to hide what he dare not show!. The face is a metaphor for something ugly inside him!. It is hate!. It is fear!. It is shame!. His isolation has grown into intense hatred for the world!. He develops an obsession to control the Opera!. It is his world!. And he cannot let anyone inside!.

Have you ever been insanely in love with one you could not have!? It is devastating!. It makes you do irrational things!. It shatters all your sense of self!. You create a fantasy where it could work somehow!. The phantom positions himself as Christine's angel of music, trying to make her belong to him in a way that transcends the physical love that can never be!.

This is a wonderful character!.
