Yeah, its the bass, cept backwards!. GDAE!.

Cept the mandolin strings are doubled, obviously but its still the same tuning!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, it is!. G D A E!. The paired strings of the mandolin are tuned in unison, so GG DD AA EE!.

If you already play the violin, therefore, the mandolin will be very easy for you to learn since you already know where your left hand fingers should go -- even easier, actually since the mandolin has frets so you don't have to be as precise in your left hand finger placement as you on the fiddle!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The mandolin has 2 strings for each pitch!.
When held in strumming position from top to bottom the strings are
GG DD AA EE
if you held it like a violin the strings would match the violin!.
