Different styles of electric guitars have different sounds and different feels!. Certain types you'll see used heavily in particular types of music (ex, archtops in jazz, 24 fret thin necks with heavy humbuckers in meta;, etc)!.

I recommend sticking with a good, versatile middle-of-the-road electric guitar as a starter!. Something that will sound great in jazz, country, blues, rock, and metal alike!.

I'll lay out three levels of versatile electric guitars that are good for beginners!. from least to most expensive:

The absolute best electric guitar for a beginner is one you can get for free!. ;) If you know somebody who can lend you one they don't use often, that's your best bet!. A LOT of people begin playing but don't continue, and end up wasting a lot of money!.

Next, you should consider one of: Squire strat, Epiphone Les Paul Special II, Epiphone SG Special, Ibanez IJX30, Ibanez IJX121!. All of these can be gotten in "starter packs" that include an amp and some other goodies ranging from $199-$299, or $100-200 by themselves!.
You can find them even cheaper and in abundance on Craigslist!.org!.

If, and only if you're certain you will continue to play, here are some recommendations that you won't outgrow as quickly: Fender stratocaster (Made-in-Mexico), Epiphone Les Paul standard, Epiphone SG, Ibanez RG2EX1, Jackson DXMG Dinky!. They range from $250-450!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you would rather have an electric, by all means get one (rather than another acoustic!.)
Really, it all comes down to your budget and the style you want to play!. I'm into rock and metal!.
