As with any design, it begins with a sit-down with the director!. The designer isn't often the one actually building the set (that frequently falls to the technical director), but it's his or her job to make sure the director's vision is met!. A director may not know what he or she wants as far as the physical space the actors move in, and the designer is hired because a level of expertise in the field is a given!.

It's the designer's responsibility to provide drawings, sketches, preferably models to the director!. Other factors come into play as well: the performance space itself, costume and lighting requirements, props, set dressing, etc!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
