In my opinion as an experienced guitar player and performer that you should take at least a month or two of beginner lessons to start with!.
Buy some good beginner chord books!. There are quite a few to choose from!.
I used Mel Bay Guitar books when I was a kid, but that was 40 yrs ago!.
they are still around and I guess they are still OK!.
There is probably better stuff out there these days
!.Ask a music store or your guitar teacher what he would recommend!.
I have have not used them in a loooooooong time :-)

But do take a few lessons so you can learn how to use your fingers to hold down the strings to get good tone!. Picking techniques are also important to learn!.
At first you may just learn single note tunes to learn the fretboard and musical notation for those notes!. Then you will learn simple 2, 3, and 4 finger chords!.

I myself took about a month or two of beginner lessons when I was 8 and then took soloing lessons when I was 14!. In between I used the Mel Bay books and practiced and played along with records!. I used to play around for 3-4 hours a day because I loved it!. I don't think that's for everyone, but try to play at least 1/2 to an hour a day!.
I started playing with "folk" groups when I was 10 and played in rock bands starting about 15!.

Your left hand fingertips will hurt for a little while, but after you build up a callus on them, it won't hurt at all, unless you stop playing for too long!. then you will have to rebuild them up, but it doesn't take as long the second time around!.

So, yes take a few lessons to learn some good habits and then practice your rear-end off!. That should get you playing well if you have the knack for playing guitar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Me and my brother both play guitar!. I play bass and he plays a six string!. yeah I'm a girl lol! but back to the question! He took the lessons and i tried to teach myself!. He now pretty much knows everything about it and I'm no where near! I would reccommend taking the lessons!. Yeah it takes some money but in the long run you are going to learn the notes and scales a lot faster than if you tried to teach yourself! Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lessons are much, much better!. When you're starting out there will be a million small questions that will stump you on your own but a teacher can quickly answer for you!. He or she will get you started on the right track and keep you from picking up nasty habits that will be hard to break later on!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
