The degree and the university where you received it will get you the auditions!. That is what the paper diploma is worth!.
It is the education that you will receive that makes the difference!.
I am a firm believer in the proper education!. it is very unlikely that you will be able to gain the knowledge needed without university or conservatory training!. You need to be highly selective in the education that you pick!.
Good Luck and enjoy your music!.

I graduated this year with one, and I'm still unemployed!.

A degree in music is not going to get you a playing job alone, though it will help lend credibility!. How you get work from a music degree is the people you meet while studying it- your peers!. That network you build is your work!. Short of that, you record yourself, you put yourself out there!. The degree is gonna make you get better at music!. But when someone wants you to play, i would have thought whether you get chosen is going to be based on your musicality, your personality, any reccomendations, your reputation!. Not whether you have a BA or a Bmus!.

Get in a band that does well, and you'll get to tour and play!. That should give you an idea- to wish for something like that, you have to be pretty good, or pretty lucky!. Don't set your heart on it, but aim high!

Music is damn hard, and lots of us muso's need a day job!.!. and at the moment getting one of them seems pretty hard if you've spent your time studying and not getting experience!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The richest musician I know sells insurance (inherited the busines from his father)!. He plays side gigs and does alot of studio work too! While I am certain he makes enough cash just playing-I bet his wife likes the security of the business he owns!.

If you want to get into a touring band, networking is key! Your reputation is everything!. I know of one great musician who left university to tour with a name big band, but his personality was so annoying they fired him halfway through the tour!.
MORAL OF THE STORY; you can get hired for your talent, but other things come into play (like professionalism & not being an egomaniac)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
