Alto is one of five traditional vocal types that includes soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass!. There are additional vocal types that combine qualities from two neighboring types or represent extremely high or low range, but you need not worry about those!.

Alto means "high" in Italian and is the designation used for high voice, but not the extreme high range!. Soprano is derived from the Latin word, "superius," and the Italian "sopra" which means over!. This is the highest voice with a traditional range of middle C to C6 (two octaves higher) and beyond for a coloratura!.

So you have a high voice but not the highest!. The normal range for an alto is G below middle C to G5 (the G at the top of the treble clef staff)!. You may discover that your vocal type changes as you continue to mature!.

In a four part or SATB choir, the altos have the second highest line!. This part sometimes doubles or compliments the sopranos, and, at other times, it may double or accompany the the male or lower voices!.

Choral conductors have various schemes for setting up their choirs to achieve a balance!. This may depend on the number of each vocal type, the relative strength of each section and the literature that the choir is performing!.

Sopranos are not "better" than altos!. They just have a different role to fill in the choir!. If fact, altos typically are asked to sing inner parts that are more difficult to sing than the tune so perhaps your teacher has a great deal of confidence in your singing ability and needs you in this critical role!Www@QuestionHome@Com

An alto is a singer who is more suited for lower keys when it comes to songs, a soprano is someone who can hit the higher notes and higher keys of songs!. And the reason why altos sing with the tenor and bases is because boys have lower voices compared to girl altos; you are basically sopranos compared to the tenors and bases of the boys!. It's all about balance!. Hope this helps you and good luck in choirWww@QuestionHome@Com

There are 5 classification of Choir voices!. Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, and Bass!. Alto is the second highest, it doesnt mean its low it just mean it has more of a melodic hymn to it than soprano!. Soprano's and Baritones get more singing and solos!. Alto, Tenor, and Bass keep a subtle yet powerful melody!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

alto is lower than soprano but is higher then tenor and the basses!. However those parts sometimes go together for harmony!. They are all voice types!. It groups you into a singing range!. when you say basses they have a lower deeper voice while you are an alto you have a higher voice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
