Simple chords - 6 months
Simple leads and riffs - 1 year
Simple soloing, more complex rhythm stuff - 2 years

This is very, very optimistic, to me, and assumes that someone is helping you!. It's one thing to learn how to play chords sitting down by yourself, it's another thing to learn how to play chords standing up, maybe bopping around a bit, playing in time with other people, etc!.

I could easily see adding between 6 months and 2 years to each of the times above depending on how well you pick it up, the quality of teaching you get, and how many days a week you actually spend playing with other people!. There are an awful lot of variables involved, and just knowing how to play is only one of them!. The gear you use makes a difference, your role in the band makes a difference, whether you're expected to contribute to songwriting makes a difference, the style/genre of music and level of quality the band strives for makes a *huge* difference!.!.!.

It can take six months for a band, jamming together for a few hours once a week, to really "gel", or even longer if the music is complex, level of experience of the members, etc!.

I mean, if you're playing punk and all you've got to learn are a few power chords, barre chords, and a few two finger solos, I would expect things to go a lot smoother than if you're trying to learn the multiple-time signature, half-legato, half-tapping, half-jazz chording stylings of some prog rock, what with key modulations, two or three dozen chords, and soloing in multiple keys!. That kind've knowledge takes years to absorb, and potentially years more to become technically proficient in!.

Well for me it took six months!.!.!.but dammit I practice 2-4 hours a day!. It would take you six months for maybe a simple rock band, besides your first band is usually one for jamming!. It's a great way to learn how to play with other people, stay in time, and begin to improvise on chords!. It's also an excellent way to meet new people and to become more creative: write your own songs, learn new things about different instruments, make new friends even!
But if you want to get into a serious serious band!.!.!.2-3 years!. Probably longer!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

6 months!. It would probably be a pretty bad band but everyone has to start somewhere!. I remember my first band and we sucked really badly!. Now I'm in my 7th we sound pretty good but the first few are usually just to get used to playing as a group!. It takes a long time to find the people that you really gel with musically!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

depends on how good the band is!.!.!.ive been with my band since i was 11!.!.!.im 16 now and i reckon i suck!.!.!.ppl tell me otherwise tho it's kinda annoying!.!.!.

but probs 1!.5-2 years your looking at to be really good and competent!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, it all depends on how dominant your role is in the band!.

But maybe six months!.

Or once you have memorized all of the chords!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you have to ask that question, then I would suggest you don't give up the day job just yet!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
