Harvey,
For $50 you can't beat the Lanikai LU-21!.
http://www!.musiciansfriend!.com/navigatio!.!.!. It's nato wood but has a decent sound for $50!. It has geared tuners which makes it easier to tune!.
If you some extra change put Aquila Nylgut strings on it!. It'll make all the difference in the world!. http://cgi!.ebay!.com/AQUILA-SOPRANO-Nylgu!.!.!.

I don't play ukelele, but from what I've seen online and in hardcopy catalogs such as the one put out by Elderly Instruments, there are no "well-crafted and good sounding" ukes for less than $50!.

I bought my 2 1/2 year old nephew a Rogue uke online from Musicians Friend, not expecting much in the way of quality as it was meant more as a toy "guitar" for him to play with!. I think I paid about $35 including shipping charges, and I got about what I expected in terms of quality -- IOW, not a whole lot better than a toy!. OTOH, if you're just starting out learning to play, you could probably get by with a Rogue uke and then upgrade to something better after you've been playing for a while!.

You can spend almost as much on a good uke as you would on a good guitar!. IOW, if you want a well crafted and good sounding one, expect to spend several hundred dollars!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
