Try adding pull-offs and hamer-ons to your chords for a bit more interest!. It adds so much more to the basic stuff you already know and makes it a lot more enjoyable!.
eg - D while strumming D stick your little finger on 6th string 3rd fret (a G note) and take it off again!. This alternates your D with Dsus4!.
You might find that this starts to sound like some songs you know - famous songs using sus4 are Pinball Wizard by The Who and This Thing Called Love by Queen!.
Every chord will have a sus4!.
Once you have that sorted, think about sus2!. In D this is made by playing the chord without fretting the 6th string (ie replacing the F# with E)
Try this D - Dsus4 - D - Dsus2 - D
Sounds like Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi huh!? ;)

Once you can do that for all the chords you know you'll be flying! So then why not try picking rather than strumming!?

Lastly, look for passing notes between chords!. Say you're strumming C 4 times and want to go to Am, on the 4th strum don't play the bottom C but play a bottom B instead (C/Bbass) Or when going from G to Em drop the bass one fret to F# on the last strum!.

Once you combine all these tricks you'll be much more interested!.

Since you know some basic chords already, I'd suggest learning the CAGED system!. You'd be better off searching Google b/c it's a bit hard to explain in words, but here's a brief summary!.
You know how to play C on frets 0-3 already!.
The next C chord takes the shape of an A chord (frets 3-6)
The next C chord takes the shape of a G chord (frets 6-10), etc!.

If you start with G chord on frets 0-3, the next G is in the shape of E, etc!. And if you want a sharp, you just move the chord shape up a fret, etc!.

Now you know chords up and down the neck using the same 5 chord shapes!. Next thing to learn, each of the five chord shapes has a Major Pentatonic scale (1, 2, 3, 5, 6 degrees) that "lays over" the chord!. Now, no matter where on the neck you're playing, you can recognize what chord shape you're playing, which in turn let's you know which Maj Pent scale to play over it!. You can use those notes to solo, make up a harmony, play rhythm w/o just strumming chords!.
