WONDERFUL!!!!!! If I had a nickel for every young person who said "I want to improve my voice, but I do NOT want to take lessons !. !. " , then I would be rich!. You are the PERFECT age - I taught vocal music to MS and HS students since 1971 - just retired 2 weeks ago - still a competition judge in NY!. You need to fine the BEST teacher you can - a poor teacher is waste of money, but a great teacher, even if more expensive, is a bargain! Find someone who at LEAST has a degree in voice - a certified teacher (one with a teaching license) is usually better!. Are you in Chorus in school!? Ask your conductor for recommendations!.

Now - there are LOTS of exercises involved, - not all are easy or fun, but THEY make you grow! It's not all about the solos - think of it like ballet: you see students doing all kinds of exercises at the barre, and THEN they have the skills they need to take on a challenging role!.

Since I assume you parents will be paying for these lesson, go show them this response - and then tell them that a good teacher in NY said that you should give them a BIG HUG and a big thank you! You might also want to learn some piano/keyboard skills - they will be a HUGE help to you in your vocal studies - and help with reading music, sight-reading skills, etc!.
