In my marching band, we first master the music!. We get it well enough to play by memory (sitting down)!.

Once we have it memorized, then we start "marking time" or just marching in place!. That gives us the feel of moving and playing in rhythym, without having to concentrate on which direction or kind of step to take!.

Next, work on learning the drill without playing!. I find it helpful to march along to a recording of the song after i have marched the drill set a few times!. Learn the set so that as you march it, you also be thinking about what part of the music you will be playing!.

Lastly, put it all together!. Start out slow if you have to!. Know that everyone messes it up sometimes!. And just keep trying until you get it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, depending who you ask, you will get answers that both are more important!.
Play your music, but try to play it slowly and mark time to it!. Then practice your 'sets' without music until you have them down!. Then try to play and march at the same time!. They are both equally important if you ask me, but you should find out what your director thinks and maybe focus on that a little more, too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To begin with just work on you marching technique!. When you feel that you have it down alright then you start playing the music with the marching!. You work on the music seperately!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
