Question: Questions about Nyssma! (for level 5 voice)!?
Hi!. I'm doing Nyssma on Saturday (5/31) and I'm getting soooo freaked out!!! I don't even know why!. I've done this 3 other times but now it's out of 100 points because i'm doing a level 5! I'm doing an italian song called Nina!. I know it pretty well but now i keep looking at it and finding these little things i'm questioning!. Don't even get me started on sight reading! Oh my gosh!. Can someone give some advice on how to get a good score or any tips!. Is there any major difference between a level 4 and a level 5!? Sight singing tips!? I'm desperate! Please!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am a NYSSMA jusge - and I am judgin on 5/31, but I am doing piano this time!. I teach voice in school - since 1971!. The sightreading rubrics are in the front of the manual - your teacher should have examples for you to work on that MATCH these rubrics!. Of course it is harder than grade 4! You should COUNT - tap your foot or hand, and KEEP GOING - do not stop!. Use a pitch system like solfege, or numbers!. You wil have easy rhythms - half notes, quarter notes, paris of eighths - no sixteenths!. There will be rests!. There will be arpeggiated skips, but not many!.

Relaxe - we hear 300,000 students a year, and the gorund does not open up and swallow anybody! The judges are nice people - we do this because we LOVE it (it certainly isn't for the tteny check we get!)!. Do well - I will be in Shrub Oak, hearing piano NYSSMA soloists!. I leave school in one hour to pick up my luggage, eat, change, and drive down! Gotta stay for one more rehearsal (yup, I'm writing at school! Shhhh!)Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all, RELAX!. You won't do well if you make yourself extra nervous!

It's been a long time, (over 30 years!) since I did NYSSMA in high school, but I seem to recall being told you had to do at least a level 5 solo if you wanted to make All-State!.

As for the sight-reading, try to practice so you are used to it!. When you do the audition, be patient and take your time!. Look for tricky spots!. If you know solfege ("Do, re, mi") or some other system, go ahead and use it!

Good luck on your audition!Www@QuestionHome@Com
