A tie connects two notes of the same pitch (thus having the effect of "tying" together the two note values) while a slur connects two notes of different pitches (so the player has to play them as smoothly as possible and thus "slur" the notes together!.)

Hence, A to A is a tie; A to C# is a slur!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
