I don't know exactly what you mean by "stubby" fingers in reference to guitar playing ability but I tell you this:
Of all concert guitarist that I have met (back-stage) the one that I can't never forget because the size of his hands and fat (or "stubby") fingers is (was RIP) the great Andres Segovia!.
At the last concert by him that I attended he was using a large-scale-length Hermann Hauser guitar!.

If by "stubby" you mean short fingers then a "short-scale" guitar will be one solution!.
