these are some of the best self taught players

Guitar players probably belongs to the group of musicians that has the largest percentage of self taught musicianship!. In this article I define "self taugt" as lacking formal musical education!. Some of the greatest guitarists of all time has been self taught!. Including Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour,Nick Drake and many many more!. I think the fact that these player are self taught is partially responsible for their success as guitar players!. Being self taught gives you the freedom to think outside the box musically and produce unique sounds!. Self taught guitarists have also been responsible for some major innovations in guitar playing and techniques and sometimes helps define whole new genres of music!. Eddie Van Halen and Kurt Cobain represents complete opposites when it comes to sound and technique but are both great examples of how being self taught is contributing to music!. Eddie Van Halen although not entirely self taught, moved on to being self taught at a new level when he introduced the guitar technique "tapping" Kurt Cobain, altough not a techniqual genius created a whole new and raw style of guitar playing and is indeed a genius when it comes to song writing!.

I myself am a self taught guitarist, although I don't even come close to even compare to these guys, I love the freedom of experimentation being self taught gives you!. You are not confined to a predefined set of rules and this makes it even more fun to play because you are constantly discovering new things!. I don't read notes but do read guitar tablature, this is essential for any guitarist so you can write down your riffs and licks in order to remember them!. Tablature really has nothing to do with music theory, it is only a numerical representation of the fretboard of the guitar and it is quite easy to learn!.

After learning the basic chords and scales the way I learned was by getting together with other guitarists and jam at the local pub every friday night!. Young and old got together and exchanged tips and techniques and taught eachother what we knew!. I also bought guitar magazines whenever any of my favorite artists was featured, these came with a CD with backing tracks and of course tablature to all the featured songs within the mag!. This was a great way of learning for me because you where able to play your favorite songs with full band backing!. I also practiced a lot of scales and fingering exercises, but the one thing that taught me the most was the time spent half drunk with a bunch of other guitar nerds at the local pub every friday night!. This is where I developed the most as a musician and it was great fun too!.

There is really no single trick or strategy on how to become a self taught guitarist, this fact is however the very essence and advantage of being self taught because there are no rules!. It's all about experimentation, you play by your own rules and eventually find your own voice!. My final advice is simple, simply go out there and teach yourself how to play the guitar!. That's right, just do it! The only thing you need is enthusiasm and creativity and you'll get there eventually!.

PLUS, sometime by taking lessons you are molding yourself to their (the teachers) expressions and lossing your own creativityWww@QuestionHome@Com

i would suggest sticking with an instrument and not spreading yourself around!.!.!. you cannot learn the piano in a summer, you could perhaps learn the basics!. If i was you i would continue with the piano, even if the guitar seems the 'cooler' choice!. I would also get a teacher for the piano, because unlike the guitar, a piano player of any skill cannot be self-taught!.!.!.
so as a pianist of 5 years i would not say that i have fully 'learnt' the piano, and for you to use the term so blatantly is a considerable insult to me!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

OK--in my opinion it all depends on how good you want to be!. Piano I find it hard to believe that you've "learned!." You've learned the basics, but no offense, unless you have insane musical talent you are probably not that great yet!.

Why IS your mom bugging you!? If she's a musician, she probably just wants you to get started correctly w/out forming bad habits!. You're lucky she wants to pay for you to get lessons!. Take the opportunity!. I find it hard to believe you're so free-spirited and great at music that you can't take a little instruction!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It sounds to me like you 'PROBLEM' is that you don't know how to take direction or criticism, so you are just looking for excuses to explain why you are so bad at it!.

You may have played the piano last summer but you didn't LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE PIANO!.!.!. anyone who claims to "play the piano" and then admits they can't read music!.!.!. is a FAILURE at playing the piano!.

If you aren't willing to take direction and criticism, the don't waste your mother's money on lessons you don't want in the first place!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

yeah dont model urself aftera teacher try to learn and develope ur own style !.!.!. jimmy hendrix was a lefty playing on a righty guitar!.!.!.!.and he was self taught!.!.!.!.!.!.!.get ur own road to follow like he did!.!.show her you dont need a teacher!.!.if u can that is!.!.!.r u any good!?at playing instraments!?play moonlight sonata on the keyboard or piano!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I applaud your mom for supporting your desire to play music!. You are very lucky that is the case!

If you had a problem taking lessons, perhaps you couldn't connect with the teacher, or vice versa!. Or, maybe the teacher insisted that you worked on building a solid foundation, using scales and chords, rather than "playing music"!? While it may not be "fun" to learn the basics, every musician!.!.!. self-taught or not!.!.!. has learned good fundamentals!.

Reading music is not that difficult!. The notes will always remain the same within a given clef, of course!. As for rhythm, if you can read a ruler, you can read rhythm!. Yes, there is a learning curve!.!.!. and, it takes time!.

As for being left-handed, as long as you're playing a left-handed guitar, it shouldn't present a problem!. Even a traditional right-handed guitar, if you are taught right, and spend the time developing good fundamentals, and good technique, you will probably be just fine!.

I'm left-handed as well!. What I've discovered about myself is that regardless of "how" I am taught, I have to figure out for myself "what" I am being taught, and apply it!. I think that you would be surprised to learn just how many left-handed people there are in the arts!.

Another poster mentioned finding a "cool" teacher!. Well, they are out there! Depending on how many teachers there are in your town/city, maybe you can take "a" lesson, until you find someone with whom you are comfortable!.

also, do keep up with learning the piano!. Do the same thing, if possible!.!.!. find a teacher that you like, and work "with" him/her!.

Best of luck to you!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lessons aren't that bad, and playing guitar, well let me break down my answers for this!.
1!. Its cool that you learned to play piano by yourself, unlike piano, guitar is harder!. Since your mom is nagging you about taking lessons try to work out a compromise!. Like say you'll take 2 weeks worth of lessons and if you like your teacher then you may want to contune!. I had a really cool guitar teacher!. He made playing a lot of fun!. Don't worry about not being able to read sheet music, a good teacher will teach you the tricks to reading sheet music!. Ask her if YOU can pick out the teacher, ask your friends where a good place to learn would be or go to a music store and say you want lessons and they'll set you up!.
2!. I'm a lefty, and a normal guitar is hard to play!. It'd be go to get a lesson with a lefty so they can show you tricksWww@QuestionHome@Com
