Question: As a trumpeter, could I double as an oboist!?
Well, I play, and I love trying new instruments; I know and can play the Bb scale on the flute and trombone, and I have a bit of experience with the clarinet!. Is it recommendable for me to try the oboe next!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Go for it! I am a clarinet principal at my university, and I picked up an oboe and could play simple songs by the end of the week!. It is not as complicated as people make it out to be!. If you have woodwind experience, then, given some woodshedding, you could certainly learn to play it to some degree of decency!. Plus, the newer instrument, the more fun it is!.

However, it really does depend on your aptitudes!. Some people have no trouble at all on instrument X but can play instrument Y with relative ease and other people have the reverse problem!.

To answer your question, I think that you should try it; but, realistically, unless you devote as much time as you do to your tpt!. playing, then I do not think you should expect to be able to double on it in a professional capacity!.

Some food for thought: In the HS and Middle School realms, I have heard some HORRID oboe players in top performing arts schools, so, clearly, the field is pretty even in those levels!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

if you major in trumpet it wouldnt really be bad, at least not if your looking for a career in music!. It wouldnt be bad at all!. Im a trombone major and i can play trombone baritone trumpet and tuba!. =)Www@QuestionHome@Com

uuuuh, good luck!. oboe is complicated!. I'm a clarinet player and it's hard for me!. I would suggest french horn, trombone, euphonium, or something like that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
