If you pick it up every day, and fool around with it for at least 45 minutes to an hour!.!.!.

Within a year, you will be able to confidently perform songs for people!.!.!.

The "everyday" thing is the key, though, because if you "skip" a day, you don't "retain" what you learned, and keep having to "re-learn" it a little everytime!.!.!.

In February of 1982, I started fiddling around with the guitar!.!.!.

By October 1983, I was playing fraternity party gigs in a cover band!.!.!.(and until Halloween 1986, the last gig I played, I've loved every minute of it!.!.!.it's the best thing I ever did for myself, and I recommend learning the guitar to everybody, whether or not you intend to ever play in a band!.!.!.electric or acoustic, whatever, and lately I've been playing acoustic almost exclusively!.!.!.)

But I have "a good ear for music," which is a "big advantage" over people who struggle with their "hearing ability!.!.!."

I learned by "sound" alone!.!.!.I know everything now, but the first band I played in, I didn't know what notes I was playing!.!.!.I just knew the chords and notes "sounded" right!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is a gaggle of us acoustic guitar players out here!.

In August 1956 a friend from Kentucky drew down 11 chords on a sheet of paper for me!. With intermittent help from him in working out rhythm methods, I focused on the standard Country tunes of the times!. While in high school I took a year of Vocal and learned how to read and write music--the best thing that ever happened for me to progress!.

I purchased a guitar chord book that also had music theory notation fitted for the instrument!. Using what materials were available, I soon began to write music, which prompted even more theory study and application!.

In essence, I never had a professional lesson from anyone unless I count that old boy from Hazard, Kentucky, and his sheet of 11 chords!.

I've been playing and teaching guitar since then--discounting some times while serving in the U!.S!. Army!. I learned on an acoustic, played professional on an electric, but now enjoy the acoustic even more so!.

If you have the strong desire to learn to play the guitar, then you will do it!. You must live, breathe, and love the guitar to do it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've been playing since the 60s, and I would say I'm very good!. It's going to be up to you as to how long before you're quite good!. Don't make up excuses, and don't give up!. Good luck!.

it really depends on how you learn, and how good you are at picking up things like that!. It's irrelevant how long it took each asker, because the time it takes to learn an instrument varies with each individual personWww@QuestionHome@Com
