You usually want to set it up after a long time of it not being played, or once every two-ish years!. It's not going to kill the guitar if you don't but just keep in mind that after romping on it for a few years it needs a little lovin'!.

also, a little piece of advice, take down the specs on the guitar, like the action (how high the strings are off the neck) and where everything is set up before hand, then take note afterwards!. Then, you can do some of it yourself next time, or change some stuff back if you don't like it!.
