Using the side of your finger might help a little bit, but not a whole lot!. Fret buzz is very common when people try to learn bar chords, my students complain about fret buzz so much, that I have an automatic response and here's what I say to my students: "When you have fret buzz, you're either putting your finger too close to the frets, and not exactly in the middle, or, you're not pressing hard enough" That should cure the problem!. However, this is always possible, it might be that your guitar was fretted wrong!. It's possible that the maker of the guitar did not line the frets correctly, but this only happens in cheap guitars (around $100 - $500 guitars)!. If you have an expensive guitar, this should not be the case, and it is probably your form!. But try to press harder, or try to center your index finger on the frets!.
