Question: Lennon or Dylan as the most important songwriter on the 20th Century!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I would say Dylan but it's very close!. Imagine is a masterpiece song, but Blood on the tracks is a masterpiece album!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Like them both!. I will give the nod between the two of them to Dylan because I think Lennon would give the nod to Dylan as more of an influence on him then Lennon was on Dylan!.

Another Great songwriter that should be considered from an earlier era "The Tin Pan Alley era" is Irving Berlin!.

He is generally aknowledged as the most important "American Songwriter" of the 20th Century!. He wrote over 100 songs that were record by numerous artists!.

He has had songs by him in more Hollywood movies than any other composer!.

His song "White Christmas" has been recorded by over 500 artists and was once the top selling song of all-time!.

( may still be but some say that Elton John's tribute to Marilyn Monroe turned tribute to Princess Diana "Candle in the Wind" holds that record now!.)

also wrote the American standard "God Bless America" plus many, many, many others!. He's worth a google search to anyone that is not familiar with him or the songs he has written!.

Dylan made him sound like he was a poet Like Dylan Thomas!. Zimmerman (His real name) just wasn't a good name for a rock, folk, pop, blues, etc!.!.!.!. singer/songwriter!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Both Lennon and Dylan are definitely to be considered wordsmiths, but in songwriting, the music is very important!.

For this reason, I would choose neither of them!. However, I wouldn't name anyone anyway because there's just no way to determine who is/was the "most" important or important to WHOM!.

For those who'd like a few reminders, just take a look at these names:

The beatles changed the face of rock n roll, they changed the sound of rock n roll, they led the way in influencing advanced technology and orchestration and never stayed in one little easy to fit sub-genre!. Without the beatles, rock would sound very different today!.

I don't that either of them were necessarily important in the way that you state your question but, I difinitly feel that Dylan is the man!. And did you know that Bob Dylan is not his real name!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Could go with either

I prefer Lennon

Both great cerebral writers although I've always felt Lennon wrote more from the heart

Lennon!. He wrote on his own AND with The Beatles!. I think he put out more quality music and influenced culture more than Dylan did!. I love both of them, though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Dylan by far!.!.!.!.!!! He wrote music for everybody!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lennon spoke of peace and love, and dylan spoke about real things, good or bad, so I would have to say Dylan!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
