Well my first guitar was a Fender Squire (Telecaster not a Strat though) and I had no complaints!. It was easy to customise too, I fitted a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder bridge pickup for some serious output for when I wanted to play metal, kept the old school neck pickup for blues!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Les Paul (by Gibson) is a great guitar to start with!. It's always better to buy quality instruments!. Never waste your money on cheap equipment!.
also I suggest trying both guitars!. Which is easier for you to play!? Choose that one!.
A lot of beginners have sore fingers from practicing chords, and for them a classical guitar (with nylon strings) is a lot easier to play and practice on!. Youi can always change guitars later!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

maybe check out silvertone, or one of the walmart brands if you want to start out really inexpensive!. Walmart has a better warranty than the music stores believe it or not :)

ibanez and peavey are also good brands with many models to choose from!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Go for the Les Paul
