Question: When making a solo, do I only use the the chords of the scale or the entire scale!?
I am trying to make a solo for a song we are doing in jazz band and I'm a little confused!. If over the solo part, C is written (as in the C Major scale) do I only use the chords of the scale (C, E, & G) or do I use the entire scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C)!. also, if anyone knows, is a Bmi scale the same as a D major scale!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Definitely use all the notes of the scale!. You can also use notes outside of the sale, the #'s and b"s, if your ear guides you that way!. If it sounds good it's O!.K!. And yes a B minor scale is the same as a D Major scale!. B minor is the aeolian mode of D Major's Ionian mode!. Basically they use the same notes of the D major they just start and finish in different places!.(D major= D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.B minor = B, C#, D, E, F#, G, A, B!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Use the entire scale!. It will fit over the chords that are being played in the piano, guitar etc!. Get a Jamie Abersoll ( sp!? ) book There will be a list of most varied scales!. Bmi is the same as DM!. The important thing is don't be afraid to make a mistake in improvising!. you will learn and perhaps discover some notes that work much better than planned!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
