Question: Strong chest voice, terrible head voice!. How can I strengthen my head voice to be as strong as my chest!?
Right, so, hello all!. I'm 15 years old and have just been accepted into the Shades Valley Theatre Academy, which a prestigious 4 year course that is offered at my highschool!. It's considered musical theatre, and because I'm not as accustomed to musical theatre, I don't have much (if any at all) experience with singing in the range that will be expected of me when I get on stage!. I mean, when I auditioned, I had a transposed version of the piece I was doing!. I'm an alto, and have a very, very strong chest voice!. I seldom use my head voice, and when I do, the result is weak, unsteady, soft, and sounds nothing like my natural voice!. The only way I can hit notes is by straining my vocal chords, and that sounds terrible--not to mention it's painful!. I've started working on using my diaphram more, but my darn head voice just won't cooperate!.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could build up my head voice!? I mean, it's really terrible!. Any ideas are appreciated!.

Your head voice is inherently different from your chest voice, so while you can build it up to be even stronger than your chest voice, it'll be strong in a different way!. When you hit high notes with your chest voice, that's called belting!. Musical theater employs that technique a lot, actually!. For instance, listen to Idina Menzel!. If you want to build your head voice, take a couple of opera lessons!. I'm not kidding!. :] Your main source of power in your head voice is resonance, NOT how hard you push!. In fact, it should feel light and easy and be louder than anything!. A voice teacher can show you how to properly do that!. also, practice!. Practice your head voice and it will develop!. However, I strongly suggest taking lessons first because you could learn some bad habits or possibly even hurt your voice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Just practise, practise hitting the notes that you need to hit when your warming up before you actually try and sing them!. My vocal teach also told me that when you need to hit the high notes squeeze your back you've probably heard of it (it's called bracing) it doesn't work right away but over time it will help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Anna is right!. But you can harm your voice by pushing too hard when you go up there!. You actually need less breath, so go lighter!. It will sound different than your chest voice, it's supposed to!. The important thing is a smooth transition!. You really should have a voice teacher to help you do this safely!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
