It will go away as your lip develops another callous, but something you can do to help prevent getting these sores is to take 500 mg of L-Lysine each day (available at a good supermarket or health food store).

The sore is caused by a type of herpes virus which causes canker sores, and the virus depends on L-Argenine to replicate. L-Lysine is very similar in chemical structure to L-Argenine, and the herpes virus will absorb it but not be able to replicate.

I used to get those sores frequently when I played French horn, but they went away when I started taking L-Lysine.

same this happened to me.

funny, the same thing happened to my boyfriend.
he plays the trumpet also.
his lips started bleeding in the middle of a concert!

i'm sorry i don't know.
but you should ask a doctor or dermatologist.

get well soon though!

It could be your changing of your playing. Try cleaning your mouthpiece too b/c I have had sores get on my lips from playing while I was sick and then playing later on without cleaning my mouth piece.

My suggestions for you are burt's bees to keep your lips moist.
Also, keep your mouthpiece clean. I sometimes develop zits where my embouchure is after long practice sessions. Also, if you have not practiced in some time and then get back on the horn, it will affect the pores in your lips which will also lead to zits.. they are the pits when you have to perform the next day.
