You're never too old to learn anything. I would consider purchasing a violin your tutor will be able to give you advise on this and any good music store will give advice on the correct one for your size and best value for money. Everyone has a different preference and each violin can feel differently when held under the chin as can The weight each one will be different and it also depends on which style of music you intend to learn and the acoustics.

Go to this site www.simply strings.com and take a look. A violin doesn't have to be over expensive.

Hope this helps and good luck with the lessons, I think the violin has a beautiful tone and sound to it.
Have a good weekend ;-)

Not at all!

No you are not old.. for learning any thing the age does not count.

I started learning the violin when I was 35.

Go for it ; you will love it.

PS here is a site that you may find useful. Watch the videos.

No, you're not too old.

I taught myself to play the fiddle starting when I was about 33, so 17 is certainly not too old to start!

you're not too old.

when you go in to the shop to rent your instrument make sure to ask about private instructors in your area. They should be able to give you a list of different people. Different instructors charge different amounts, higher cost does not necessarily mean that you're going to learn more though, remember that.

consider enrolling in your school's orchestra class as well. it will give you more learning opportunity.

its a good idea to rent instead of buying an instrument outright if you're not sure how much you'll like it. You can always buy an instrument later on.

The worst ? anyone could ask. Am I whatever to do something. If you want to do it. Then do it. Thats it. Get started. If you think you might be to old, which 17 is practically acient, you need to stop wasting time asking these ?s and start learning the violin. Im sorry this is tough love, and maybe to tough for some folks taste, but remember the nike slogan. JUST DO IT. At least someone got something right in this world.
