I feel strongly about his one. Anyone who gives any direction as to the creation of music is providing misdirection. Music just happens. It's born. I come up with tunes with my acoustic guitar as well as keys and my favorite the bass. Often some words pop in to ones head that can married to instruments later. Any professional telling the truth will confess that their best material was conceived not built.
Don't set out to write a masterpiece. Just play. Let the music be born. Then polish, compose and structure the heck out if it. Most of all have fun and enjoy your talent. Some of the best things ever were created just like that.
Good luck and happy picking.

When I'm writing music, I always start with the lyrics. Once I've got those down, I come up with a melody. Usually I get some kind of melody with the lyrics so it flows better, but I write out all the notes and rhythms so that I remember it exactly.

Then I set chords to the melody I've written out. I usually play around with this a lot, but I use some really odd chords because they sound good in my range/with my voice. Basically I take the melody I've written and write the chords out like you would write out a bass line, sort of.

Once I've got the chords down, I decide to fingerpick or strum, and I'll come up with strumming patterns or picking patterns. You do just have to mess around with it until you get what you like.

Good luck writing!!!!

Well you need to be able to read music and write standard music notation.

I still keep a keyboard around because it's easier to compose on the keyboard, then transpose it to sheet music for Guitar. I also find it easier to sight read a new piece of music on the keyboard to see what it sounds like before I play it on the guitar.
