How do I change the strings on a violin?

Question:I just bought a student model violin for my wife, and the slaes rep encouraged us to swap out the factory strings for better ones, as the ones on the instrument at shipping have been on there a while and are not the best quality. So, how do I go about it? I've strung guitars, mandolins, 12-string guitars, and ukuleles, but never a violin. Advice appreciated - thanks!

If you have to ask, the strings you currently have are fine!

Check out the following link, it's pretty accurate.

Change them one at a time...MOST IMPORTANT.

You do not want to risk dislodging the soundpost inside the violin. I usually start with the G string but it does not really matter.

Be careful how you wind the string on the peg : try to get it nicely coiled around the peg so that it finishes near the peg box....but NOT touching the side of the peg box.

You will probably have to straighten up the bridge after all that peg tightening : It should be at a 90 degree angle to the surface of the violin

PS remember that the pegs on a violin have to be pushed in slightly so that they grip .
