Position:Home>Performing Arts> What's the going rate for private piano lessons when the student goes to the

Question:I'm trying to find out what the average rate for private piano lessons is for a beginner student. It would be helpful to know what state or general area you live in so I have a comparison of different geographical areas. Also- what's the rate for having private piano lessons in your own home (the teacher visits your house)? Thanks!

It depends, some teachers have you for a half an hour and others for an hour. New York probably has the highest prices. I teach classical guitar in my home, and I charge $30.00 for a half hour....If I have a great student and they can't afford it I charge less, I've even taught some for free, I'll do this for students that I know can't afford lessons, but have great potential and are serious about playing. One student I had was a riot, he use to beg me if he could watch cartoons instead of playing, I use to tell his mother that he had no musical ability and had no interest in guitar but she still continued to bring him here for six months, that was one student that I would have paid the mother not to bring him, he was so cute, but not musical, he had bright red hair and tons of freckles, we use to call him Howdy Doody !!!! I'm sorry I'm going on and on and this isn't what you wanted to know but your question reminded me of this. What I would do if I were you is shop around, get estimates call different music stores, and private teachers that are in your local newspaper, even check with your local colleges, some students before they get their degree teach on the side for a lot lower price. I know the prices in New Jersey are a lot lower then N.Y. In N.J. it's anywhere from $25.00 and hour to $50.00. and even less in some areas. Good luck !!!!!!

In NY, it seems to be about $50 an hour at the teacher's house. I'll assume that having the private lesson in your home is more expensive.

It really depends on your area and also the teacher's experience- an experienced teacher with a DMA can charge alot more than a high-school band student. Rates range anywhere from $15 to over $100 an hour.

PA-for 30 min. $25
